Responding to God’s mission

“As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” – Luke 9:51 NIV

The gospel writer, Luke, could have just written “as the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus set out for Jerusalem,” and we wouldn’t have thought anything about it. But the adverb “resolutely” was used for a reason.

Jesus fully knew what he would soon endure in Jerusalem, and he still set out in an admirable, purposeful, determined and unwavering manner anyway. That shows us the enormity of his love for us – he didn’t do it spitefully, he did it in a praiseworthy way! He was submitting to his Father’s will, knowing and trusting in his purpose, and choosing to pursue his mission with determination and courage.

Jesus’ mission was to literally take on the sins of the entire world and suffer a criminal’s death, and he still chose to faithfully submit to God’s will for him. How do you respond to God’s mission for you? As believers, we too are called to “deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow him.” In attempting to do so, do you respond in the same way that Jesus responded? Or do you stand back in fear, frustration, annoyance or self-centeredness?

This reflection isn’t a profound revelation. It’s actually quite simple.. but it also reveals the trueness of our hearts for Christ, making it hard to admit that we’ve fallen short. As Holy week and Easter near, let your heart be inspired and spurred on by God’s love and example for how we should live. Approach the things that God calls you to with purpose and courage! And if you don’t feel like he’s called you to anything, then maybe you’re not listening. Search his word and see the ways he calls us to love and lead little children, help the poor, make disciples and teach others about Jesus.

Jesus didn’t give up his position in heaven to live the perfect life on earth and die in our place so that we could continue to live comfortable and self-centered lives. He came to be an example of how to serve, love and teach others, and to ultimately build his kingdom. May we receive God’s mission for us with gratitude and carry it out in faithfulness, just as Jesus did.
