Bold Faith

“And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere.” – 1 Thessalonians 1:7-8

I’m sharing this month’s invoice verse in a blog post, because these verses deserve so much more than a few sentences.

For context, 1 Thessalonians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the church in Thessalonica. He writes this letter to them not too long after visiting them and establishing the church there. Thessalonica is the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia, which is referenced in these two verses.

So what does this verse even mean? Why is Paul writing this to them in the first few words of his letter? Because he is so encouraged by their courageous faith!

Think about it – Paul just established this church. These people just became believers of Jesus Christ. And what are they doing? Living out their faith! They’re already becoming models to all believers in their region AND beyond.

These people didn’t just accept Jesus into their hearts and keep it to themselves. Their faith in God has become known EVERYWHERE! These believers are boldly proclaiming their belief in Jesus and living it out so that others can come to know him too.

As I read the words “the Lord’s message RANG out from you” in verse 8, I simply imagine these people beaming about God and his goodness to them. But that also reminds me that the Thessalonians aren’t condemning the people around them for living in sinful ways. No, instead they’re sharing the hope found in the gospel message!

Whether you’re a new believer or not, you’re called to make disciples. After Jesus rose from the grave, he came to his disciples with these instructions: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  – Matthew 28:19-20

I know that sharing your faith is scary, but if you understand the true beauty of the gift that God has given us, why wouldn’t you want to share that with those around you? Why wouldn’t you want the people that you love to get to experience the beautiful promises and blessings of God?

So today, be encouraged by the bold faith of these new believers and find the courage to share the hope you’ve found in Christ too.
