The word of God is alive and active

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God, the Bible, is alive and active. It’s living, moving and powerful. Do you believe that? That the words written in scripture still apply to today even though they were written thousands of years ago? That they have power and influence over a person’s life, causing them to change?

According to the American Bible Society, only 18% of Christians in America are “scripture engaged”. This was determined by how people responded to fifteen questions focusing on three things – frequency of Bible reading, the Bible’s impact on one’s relationship with God and others, and centrality of the Bible in decision making.

How often do you read your Bible? Do the words written in scripture influence your relationship with God or how you treat other people? Does God’s word affect how or why you make decisions?

Quite honestly, without reading the Bible it’s pretty hard to grow in your faith. How can you know what God is trying to teach you or change in you if you’re not listening to him? Oftentimes it’s through reading the Bible that I feel the most convicted, but also the most encouraged. That’s the “double-edged sword” that Hebrews 4:12 is talking about!

Throughout the past year, I’ve held tight to a handful of verses as I’ve gone through different seasons. In learning how to love my husband, I look to Romans 12:9-12. In handling our finances, we believe the truth shared in Malachi 3:10. In letting go of bitterness and anger, I’ve repeated Ephesians 4:31-32 to myself more than I’d like to admit.

God’s word is alive and active! As Christians, it should be our guide for how to live a life that glorifies Him. As we kick off 2025, I encourage you to open your Bible. Start in the New Testament – Matthew chapter 1. Just read one chapter a day and open your heart to what God wants to teach you. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105
