The Narrow Gate

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” – Matthew 7:13-14

Jesus explains that there are only two options in this life – the narrow or the wide gate. The road that leads to life or the road that leads to destruction. An eternity in God’s presence or an eternity separated from him.

Contrary to what many may think, there’s no middle ground here. A person either chooses to follow Jesus and lives as he calls us to live, or they choose to follow the things of this world and live however they want to. You can’t follow Jesus and still live how the world lives.. the Bible is pretty clear about that.

So which road are you walking? The easy one? The road that everyone else is on? Or the road that’s hard and feels like you’re the only one trying to obey Jesus’ commands? I encourage you to read what Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7 and compare your life to it. It’s going to be convicting – at least it was for me as I studied these chapters over the last month and a half. But Jesus is the only way to eternal life! He IS the narrow gate. Living how he lived IS the narrow road.

Sometimes I think we overlook the reality of our nation’s “faith”. We assume most people will be in heaven someday. But Jesus himself says “only a few find it”. To me, this brings a sense of urgency to think “Do I truly know Jesus as my Lord and Savior? Does my life actually reflect and honor him?” Maybe that’s something you should ask yourself too.

Because “Small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
