“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105
In the time that this was written, there was no electricity, batteries, or iPhone flashlights. When you walked in the dark, you relied on the lamp/lantern in your hand to shine only far enough for you to see a few steps ahead of you.
Reading this verse in light of that reality is pretty humbling. How often do I expect God to lay out my life’s plan for me to see in full? Or for him to make perfect sense of why we’re facing a certain hardship? I tend to approach God with an entitled heart, expecting him to share his knowledge so that I can feel like I’m somehow in control again.
But that’s not trust. His Word never promises that he’ll make things easy or clear to me. This Psalm tells me the exact opposite! It tells me that he will guide me by his Word… maybe one step, two steps, or three steps at a time. Just enough for me to keep moving forward IN FAITH.
This verse reminds me of the beautiful nature of our God. He shows us all throughout scripture that he is trustworthy and faithful to his promises. But it also reminds me that without his Word renewing my mind every day, I’m choosing to walk in complete darkness.. alone, lost, and without purpose.
In the same way, this verse shows that God’s Word should be our standard for what we believe and how we respond to the things of this world. We should be asking ourselves, “What does God say about this topic, lifestyle, or controversy?” Our values shouldn’t be formed based on what we think or what the world says is acceptable; it should be guided by the light of God’s truth, the Bible.
A daily prayer of mine for the last month and a half has been this: “Lord, direct my steps according to your Word.” May it be yours too.
